Bat

The morning of August 14, 2009 a, I was working in my backyard and felt something on the back of my head and tried to get it off. I walked onto my deck and then felt it on the back of my neck. I then hit it with my hand. I looked down on the floor of my deck and I saw a 7 inch in length grayish/blackish lump. I tooch it with my shoe and it flew up. I screamed and ran into the house. I saw a few scratched on the back of my neck and called Animal Control. They came and pickup the bat and froze it so they could send it to be tested in Boise. The results were negative.

When I owned a house on 4th street I would see bats flying around every night in the summer. They seemed to like to snack on the Box Elder bugs. It was always a great time to sit and watch them swoop and eat them.

Reminds me of the summer of '77. We had bats so bad, they called in the feds. Everyone stayed inside while they sprayed red stuff all over town. There was dead bats everywhere for weeks. We just threw them in the trash. Now that's "animal control".

we had bats in the evenings all the time around our house and by the lake in rural Redding, CA. I never heard of them attacking anyone before though. My husband built a bathouse to lure them into our backyard here in IF to control mosquitoes.

You can catch the bats at night w/ a fly fishing pole, while they are flying around porch lights looking for food.

I don't mind having bats around. The nice thing about them is they don't talk. Last thing I need is a bunch of snitches swooping around my house all night.

Has anyone found a bat with a battery pack and little camera attached to it? I found a dead one on my patio this morning. Almost immediately a badge flashing guy was there sliding it into a plastic box looking thing-then drove off in a black tahoe.

Bats are a necessary element to the ecosystem. They are vital in keeping the insect population under control in the upper United States. In other areas of the world they also are important in helping plants to spread their seeds.

No common brown bat, as shown in the grainy photo above, would ever attack a human. Bats are scary because you don't understand them. As a kid I used to catch them to keep them for a pet. I, unfortunately, starved them to death. Didn't know better.

Don't rabid bats act differently than healthy ones? I've heard they're more aggressive and dangerous if they have rabies.

Hey Andy - you are correct. One bite from a rabid bat and you're toast. Unless you are strong enough to live through it, but then who wants a vampire walking around?! You're better off just to croak and save the rest of us from getting hurt.

When i lived in Germany, there were bats that were about four feet across. I can see where they would get all those spooky stories.

but then again, I think a spider (no matter what size) is spooky. I can't imagine what I would do if I saw a werewolf or vampire.

It sounds like you were attacked. Almost like the bat was just waiting for you to walk out of the house!

This poor little thing was just looking for a warm place to roost. As it was morning when this happened, it was most likely tired from feeding all night and may have strayed from the colony so it hooked on to the closest mammal by instinct.

In 2004 when I was living on 12th, St. a bat chasing a moth flew in my bedroom window. Not a good thing. attached it's self to my curtain. my nite in shinging armor saved the day and removed the bat. screens on all windows after that.

It seems like there are a lot of bats in IF, doesn't it? I wonder if it has something to do with INL so close by. I have some friends in IL who live near Fermi, and they have lots of bats too. Weird.

I hate to break it to you Rondo, but Fermi is in Michigan, not Illinois. So much for your theory.

BATS ARE A GOOD THING AND ARE MIS-UNDERSTOOD. EDUCATE YOURSELVES ABOUT BATS

All I know is vampires freak me out and I've done a lot of research on those. As bats become more and more aggressive, we all run the risk of an increase in vampires in this area.

Something woke me up in the middle of the night and I heard something with a scratchy sound walking across my pillow as I was resting on my hands in the bed. I jumped up and turned the lights on and a bat was circling the room.

Yeah I doubt it "attacked" you. Probably looking for a place to roost. You were right to get it tested for rabbis though. I used to live in Illinois (yes we had lots of bats there to) and we had a lot of rabbis cases in animals there.

Good thing it was clean or you'd have to be getting all the shots. When I was younger I used to watch bats fly around. When they would fly towards me. I would throw small rocks up and watch them chase them.
