The enclosed photos are of the rail road crossings located on the old north ucon exit of highway 20 which was abandonded after the new access was built. This is the only access my elderly parents have to their home of 40 years located at 3420 east 113 north (ucon) idaho falls, id. Several years ago the rail road company tore up the timbers and installed steel posts in the middle of the road to direct traffic to one lane. The posts are a hazzard and the timbers have never been repaired. This makes the crossings very hazzardous in the summer months and to make it worse, no one is accepting the responsibility to keep the crossings plowed in the winter months creating very deep and narrow ruts. The crossings have become so dangerous that my elderly parents ages 87 and 80 can no longer leave to get their mail,my mother who has had open heart surgery has been stuck on the crossing, the post register cannot deliver their paper because the carrier got stuck right in the middle of the tracks and the garbage service is having many difficulties as well. There are trains traveling this route at least two times per day so this makes it even more dangerous. We have contacted the eastern idaho rail road company to see about getting the timbers replaced @ 1-208-403-3152 and were referred to troy who never did anything and no longer returns our calls. We have spoke to karen hyatt at the Idaho Department of Transportation in Rigby 745-7781 and she passed the buck back to the rail road. We have also contacted the mayor of the city of Ucon with no results or even an answer! Just because there are only two households who have to use this access doesn't justify the officials igoring the problem!! We are very conserned that should an emergency arise, an ambulance or fire truck would not be able to reach my parents!! We are in desperate need of some help to get this problem resolved. The crossing is located on public property. We are aware that the rail road is responsible to replace the timbers they ruined and are unsure whether the state, bonneville county or the city of ucon is responsible to plow the crossing. We were once told that the ice is so bad that it would break the snow plow blade. Why can't they sand it, wait for it to melt and then plow it???? Bringing this problem to the public's attention is our last resort before taking legal action. Any help you might be able to give us would be greatly appreciated!!!
