Eastern Idaho broadcast legend laid to rest

By Ted Dawson

IDAHO FALLS - This is how most of us knew him, the wonderful voice that brought sports to fans throughout Eastern Idaho. Saturday morning, hundreds of Jim Garchow's friends and family came to remember what an incredible man he was; navy veteran, softball star, avid golfer, loving father, heart transplant recipient, general manager of KUPI radio for 37 years, and one of the state's most-respected businessmen.

Garchow, who was a life long friend of Waylon Jennings brought country music to KUPI radio and made it the most-listened to station in the area, but it was his love of sports and the broadcasts of those events that Jim will best be remembered for. Like the famous Emotion Bowls between Idaho Falls and Skyline High Schools.

It's always difficult to say goodbye to someone like Jim Garchow, but with Jim, we have the memories in pictures, in audio tapes, and in the hearts of literally thousands who loved him.

Idaho law allows state agencies to divert some state income tax refunds to pay legal obligations like court fees, child support, and sheriff's garnishments. Taxpayers whose refunds have been diverted have no legal recourse. What do you think of the law?

  • Times are tight. If the state needs the money, this approach is better than budget cuts, tax hikes, etc.
  • I'm entitled to the refund, and the state can just take it? Unfair and ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
