Idaho fires men's basketball coach

MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) _ The University of Idaho has fired men's basketball coach George Pfeifer after two seasons and a 12-48 record.

Athletic Director Rob Spear announced Tuesday that Pfeifer will not return for the third year of his contract.

Spear says that Pfeifer improved the competitiveness of the program, but that the time was right to make a change.

He says the school is looking for a replacement.

A spokesman says Pfeifer will be paid $170,000 for the final year of his contract.

The Vandals compiled an 8-21 record this season and lost in the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
