Student Athlete of the Week - Jessie Blackburn
By KIDK Staff
IDAHO FALLS - It may be spring break for many kids in Eastern Idaho, but for 13 year old Jessie Blackburn, it is just another day at the office: a four hour workout with her gymnastics coach, Sergei Popov.
She may be able to do more, but it's going to be hard to improve on the brilliant level 8 performance she had this past weekend, a 9.3 here on the floor exercise, and that was her worst event. She scored a 9.675 to win the vault. She scored a 9.525 to win the uneven parallel bars, and a 9.475 to place second in the beam. Now, she heads for Kalispell, Montana in three weeks to compete in the regional championships. The seventh grader at Sand Creek Middle School has done all this while maintaining a 3.9 grade point average, but just like her gymnastics performances, that's not good enough for Jessie. Jessie Blackburn, a state gymnastics champion, is our KIDK Student Athlete of the Week. |
