Idaho Falls Greenbelt services in full service once temps heat up
IDAHO FALLS - Beautiful weather usually inspires us to put on our running shoes or walk the dog along the river, and then right when you get thirsty, you go for the drinking fountain, but no luck. Dan Shirely is an avid river runner. He has had his share of running with a dry mouth.

"Several times in the last couple months I've been trying to get a drink of water and found there's no where to get one," says Shirely.

"I stopped to get a drink of water and mainly for my dogs, and it wasn't working," says dog-walker, Shawn Drenes.

Idaho Falls Parks Superintendent, Eddie Farrer, tells Eyewitness News he waits on the weather before he starts filling the pipes.

"Because the water lines that feed these particular water fountains can freeze really easily and break," says Farrer.

Farrer hopes, by mid-May he can turn the drinking fountains on again. Along with the fountains and maintaining the beautiful greenbelt scenery, city employees take care of 22 outside restrooms. They start in April, from 6:00 a.m. to about 11:00 p.m. everyday. Eddie's employees keep the rooms supplied and clean, but they have dealt with some disturbing experiences.

"We've had some pretty bad incidents happen, people sleeping in them, vandalism," adds Farrer.

Meaning, those of you who run later in the evening, won't have a pit stop to use. Bathrooms are locked up at 11:00 p.m.

City workers and mother nature have to work together to get ready for the summer temperatures.

John's Hole walkway bridge is another city project that's been delayed because of the weather this year, but don't worry, it'll be up and running Wednesday and it will be a lot easier to reach Freeman Park. The bridges will connect and make your greenbelt experience even better. So, those of you enjoying the sunshine, keep in mind the river will be ready for you when the temperatures go up.

Eating healthier

Several local school districts have changed their cafeteria menus to healthier fare. What about you? Are you eating healthier than you used to?

  • Yes. I've made big changes in my diet. More fruits and veggies and less fried foods. I feel much better as a result.
  • Sort of. I made changes in my diet for awhile, but it never seemed to do much good. I've gone back to the way I used to eat.
  • I haven't made any changes, but I've always eaten a very healthy diet.
  • No. I eat what I want to eat and I don't worry about it.
