Kids race at Pebble Creek Ski Area following in the footsteps of Olympic athletes
INKOM - After watching Olympians on TV for the last two weeks dozens of kids hit the slopes in Inkom to put their skills to the test. Courtney Dawes, 11-year-old racer said, "It was actually really fun."

About 30 kids entered Saturday Stacy Smith race.

They range from one four-year-old up to 16.

The best skiers and snowboarders made it through the slalom in about 25 seconds, but everyone gave it their best. Wesley Dawes, a 9-year-old said, "Racing is about fun, not about winning."

In fact, that is one of the purposes behind the Stacy Smith Races.

Not that the competitors aren't hoping to win a gold medal. Lindsey Jones, a 10-year-old racer said, "But that's probably not going to happen so most likely silver."

Even though everyone in this race will be winning a medal, one of the goals is to motivate these kids to continue racing and skiing in the future. Mark Olson, race organizer said, "The kids enjoy it. The kids really think its great, and we think its great too, because some of these kids are going to do well later on."

Many even come back for this competition multiple times.

But for those new to racing just competing is a success. Courtney said, "It's like my first race on this hill, and I'm just so surprised that I actually could do it."

And despite the outcome they're ready for the next time they have a chance to head down the hill. Jones said, "The more you challenge yourself the better you're going to get."

Racing at Pebble Creek Ski Area will continue Sunday with the Telemark Festival.

The first run is at 8 a.m. with the classic race at 1:30 p.m.

Wind Farms

The wind turbines lining the foothills east of Idaho Falls are getting a lot of attention. What do you think about the wind farms?

  • They're too close to residential areas and they're lowering property values. They're ruining the view. Build them somewhere else!
  • They provide clean energy, and they generate local jobs and tax revenue. They're the wave of the future. Welcome to town!
  • Not sure.
