Potholes already?

IDAHO FALLS - The rough roads could mean more than just a bumpy ride. They can be damaging to your car and in this tough economy fixing a blown out tire or shattered window may be another unnecessary cost you can't afford.

"We really do rely on the public to call and let us know if there is a pothole," says Paul Hathaway, Idaho Falls Street Superintendent.

In the wake of every storm... A new crop of potholes pop up.

"Their terrible, just terrible. They cost people a lot of money and then you try to blame the city," says Paul Resendez, resident of Idaho Falls.

And that will get you nowhere, they aren't responsible for the damage. The city's street department is trying to keep them filled, but with only four crews they can't fill the holes as fast as they're being made... And this year seems to be a backlog even sooner.

"The problem we have right now is, with it being so wet. Even if we go over a pothole within a day or even hours it could get kicked backed out," says Hathaway.

A problem they try to prevent.

"If we do find a troubled area, we'll try to go down the following summer and overlay those areas," he adds.

They have the man power and it's their goal to keep them filled, but they need more people looking out.

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
