PMC looking to buy $200,000 of local artwork

POCATELLO - Portneuf Medical Center is making a big investment in the local community.

The decision will also decorate the new hospital.

PMC is looking to buy work from local artists; not only to make the new hospital more beautiful, but to make it more conducive to healing.

The Gallows is helping to coordinate all of the submissions that are expected over the next few weeks. Joydean Sorensen, Owner of The Gallows said, "It's going to be a real gem in the state of Idaho to have this collection of art. Especially from local artists."

Each piece will be reviewed by a committee of 14 community leaders and artists, and they're looking for everything. Sorensen said, "Glasswork, photography, oil paintings, watercolors, anything that the artists in our area are doing (the committee) would like to take a look at it."

Altogether the hospital plans to spend about $200,000. Brad Huerta, Portneuf Medical Center Director of Public Affairs said, "We take a lot of pride in being a good corporate citizen, and we believe this is really part of that."

Plus, the investment is a great way to help artists living in the Gate City. "Being an artist is a tough deal. They have to work very hard to sell their work, and this is just going to be tremendous," said Sorensen.

PMC issued the "Call For Artists" to make sure the new hospital will be a comfortable place for patients, their families, and employees who will spend hours inside. Huerta said, "Research has shown that having a calming well-designed environment actually helps our patients heal a lot faster."

The new building is still on schedule to be completed in 2011.
