FREE Tax help for E-filing: Times and Locations

IDAHO FALLS - As if the dark, gloomy skies of February aren't bad enough, it's time to remind you once again that the tax season is underway.

Now that your W-2's are in hand, it's time to make some choices-- will you be filing your taxes by snail mail or on-line. The state hopes you'll give up stamps for just hitting the send key.

The Idaho State Tax Commission hopes you'll file your return this year electronically. Last year, 62% of you did, and the hope is that number will continue to grow.

Of course there's no shortage of businesses who'll help you do your taxes for a fee, but you can also get tax help for free. Even if computers just aren't your thing.

Norm Kramer, Volunteer District Coordinator for the Free Tax Help Services, said, "We file $400,000 worth of services for these people, all for free."

The fact is there are hundreds of trained volunteers at various locations throughout Eastern Idaho who will walk you through both your state and federal return, and help you file it online.

Byron Bush was using the Free Tax Help Services today and he said, "They are fast here, and they double check eachother's work."

But be prepared there may be a wait getting in. Carl Johnson spoke about his wait this morning, "I came in 20 minutes to 10am and there were already about 20 people ahead of me."

The Free Tax Help locations and dates are available below:

Volunteers, who have received training from the IRS and the Idaho State Tax Commission, staff this program. They are ready to assist you in the completion of your tax returns- federal and Idaho state and it's absolutely free!!

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
