Parents asking for additional road signs
IDAHO FALLS - Getting your kids ready for school and out the door is hard enough, but some parents say that's not their biggest problem.

Nearly 900 students in the local area are trying to get to their elementary schools that are within the same neighborhood. Parents are concerned about the amount of traffic that passes through and the lack of control of this intersection.

Brooke Butler takes her child to Tiebreaker Elementary, she said, "I've been in a near accident because I have gunned it to get across the road."

Residents say the intersection of John Adams Parkway and Tiebreaker road is a huge mess in the mornings.

Mike Ward also takes his kids to Tiebreaker Elementary, he shares his frustration, "It's just frustrating because it takes so much time to get across there. I mean sometimes the only way to be able to get across is if the crossing guard has the traffic stopped going the other direction. So it can be quite irritating."

Crossing guard Ken Barnes said, "Some people get a little upset getting cut off this is a through street people think it's a stop and they'll pull out in front of them. I've seen a lot of near misses."

Tiebreaker road has stop signs while John Adams Parkway does not. So here's the problem, Tiebreaker Elementary starts at 8:15 a.m. and locals who go through this intersection have to stop. However, students at White Pine Charter start later, at 8:30, and they have the right away.

So parents of Tiebreaker students have to leave much earlier, otherwise, they could be stuck in traffic for a good amount of time.

Ward said his commute time can be about 20 minutes when it should only take about 5.

So locals are asking for a change, Butler said, "I would love to see a 4-way stop put in for the safety of the parents for the safety of the kids walking to school."

Ammon City Engineer, Lance Bates said to make a request is simple.
1. Write a request
2. Turn it in to the City Engineer
3. The request will be evaluated
4. An engineering study will be done
5. The request will be granted or denied

Bates said the amount of time to get a request granted can be rather quick.

One of the parents in the neighborhood said they will be the first, and hopefully not the last, to write a 4-way stop request to the Ammon City Engineer.

And for those wanting some traffic relief now, White Pine Charter is adding a couple more bus routes starting January 4th. This could reduce traffic by about 30 to 40 cars.

Wind Farms

The wind turbines lining the foothills east of Idaho Falls are getting a lot of attention. What do you think about the wind farms?

  • They're too close to residential areas and they're lowering property values. They're ruining the view. Build them somewhere else!
  • They provide clean energy, and they generate local jobs and tax revenue. They're the wave of the future. Welcome to town!
  • Not sure.
