UPPER VALLEY - The first electrical power outage occurred at 7:45pm Thursday night. Rocky Mountain Power tells Eyewitness News that 28,700 customers were affected from: Rexburg, Rigby, Iona, Teton, St. Anthony, and the Rocky Mountain Power area around Idaho Falls.

Power was even out at BYU-Idaho, where hundreds of students were in the middle of taking tests. Many were forced to come back Friday to finish or retake their tests. Over crowded testing is expected.

Crews located the problem and began restoring power at 8:55pm Thursday.

All customers were restored by 11:54pm

The cause is a broken insulator and damaged equipment, on a electric transmission line between Rigby and Rexburg.

Crews patrolled the line all night just to be sure power was kept online.

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
