District 91 election for $84 million bond
By Jennifer McGraw
IDAHO FALLS - "The work needs to be done. We need to make these improvements and we think that this is the right time to do that," says Margaret Wimborne, communications specialist with District 91.
With schools older than 50 years, the district feels some of them are in desperate need of improvements. After careful planning the district foresees expenses up to $84.5 million for all renovations. "Right now some of our schools are having a hard time accommodating technology just because we don't have the electrical system or outlets," she adds. The bond would rebuild four elementary schools. Remodel others to make them safer and more energy efficient and build a new elementary school to accommodate the growth. Because of the economy administrators believe now is the best time for the bond. "Interest rates are at a 40 year low. Construction rates are low. We think we can get a really good value for taxpayer money if we pass this bond now," says Wimborne. Not everyone is on board with passing this bond, in fact some have formed a campaign against it. "The interest on this is going to accumulate and if we go into a hyper-inflation, virtually what you'll have is some very high interest rates that we'll be paying and this could cost us much more than $85-million dollars," says Donald Schanz, against the bond. Right now the district projects a $200,000 home would cost $9 per month for 20 years, which adds up to be more than $2,000 per household. If interest rates change, that number could drastically change. "With the uncertain economy, it's going to be something that we need to consider very seriously taking this amount of debt on our shoulders with the uncertainties that lie ahead of us," he adds. If you live in the district, you can vote at Skyline or Idaho Falls High School. Also, any District 91 elementary school except Dora Erickson and Clair E. Gale Junior High School. Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. |
