Idaho soldier killed in helicopter crash in Iraq

KIMBERLY - An Idaho soldier has been killed in Iraq, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

The DOD says two soldiers died Sunday when their OH-58D helicopter crashed near Tikrit, Iraq.

The deceased include Chief Warrant Officer Mathew C. Heffelfinger, 29, of Kimberly, Idaho. The other soldier killed is Chief Warrant Officer Earl R. Scott III, 24, of Jacksonville, Fla.

The soldiers were assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, 25th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii.

Heffelfinger joined the Army in April 2000 and came to Schofield Barracks in December 2007. He served as an OH-58D pilot, and earned several military awards and decorations.
