Two confirmed H1N1 deaths
By Hasti Taghi
BONEVILLE CO - Boxes of the H1N1 vaccine and tamiflu are piled up in a room at the Eastern Idaho Public Health District. But before these vaccines are administered, the disease is being blamed for several deaths in our area.
"Eastern Idaho Public Health is tragically announcing our first deaths associated to H1N1 influenza this year," says Geri Rackow of the Eastern Idaho Public Health District. Two confirmed H1N1-related deaths are men ages 43 and 61. A woman in her 50's and a teenage boy from Hillcrest High School also passed away after experiencing flu-like symptoms. Although this causes concern among health care professionals, it's not leading to panic. "Actually exactly what we expected. This is a very serious virus. We've been telling people that for months," says Dr. Richard Nathan. Dr. Richard Nathan is one of only two infectious disease doctors in an area covering most of Eastern Idaho and Western Wyoming. Both are located in Idaho Falls and seeing those patients with severe cases of the illness. They recommend taking the vaccine when it's available. The problem is, for most of us, that date doesn't seem close. "We just don't have it. It's not available and it's coming to us in much smaller quantities than we had anticipated." This fridge has about 35-hundred doses of the H1N1 vaccine but that's not enough to vaccinate everyone in the priority groups. The CDC administers the vaccines and sends shipments according to population. The public health district has only a third of what they expected at this point. Doctors are gearing up for what is supposed to be a very long flu season with *more deaths expected from H1N1. Clinics to administer the vaccine are being held this week at the following locations: Bonneville County: 10/23 2:00-8:00 PM Eastern Idaho Public Health District, 1250 Hollipark Dr., Idaho Falls Custer County: 10/21 4:30-7:30 PM 721 E.
