IDAHO FALLS - It was a move riddled in controversy. It wasn't about healthcare or the economy, but rather a message to America's students regarding education. But this presidential speech was not heard by most students around Bonneville County.

"We talk to students everyday about personal responsibility and accountability. When the President of the US is re-enforcing that message, and saying the same thing, it's disappointing to hear parents are saying don't listen to that," says Diana Molino, Ethel Boyes Elementary School Principal.

In the week leading up to the speech, there was a lot of controversy surrounding what the president would say. Here at Ethel Boyes Elementary School, only four out of 14 classrooms watched the speech and even some of those students parents decided to opt out.

"I came with my own concerns and maybe even doubts, but I was pleasantly surprised and I think our students who got to watch it were actually fortunate," says mother Laura Hermann.

Those watching were District 91 students with the permission of teachers and their parents. District 93 decided to for-ego the live broadcast for now.

But these young viewers reacted positively to the words from their President.

"Helped me learn not to let myself down and work hard in school."

"Just helped me learn better and participate."

"Don't let your family down, don't let your country down, don't let yourself down."

"I think it was very encouraging. I think he encouraged them maybe as a father would encourage his child," says Herrmann.

A fatherly speech that stayed far from controversy, concentrating mainly on encouraging kids to stay in school.
