Dozens of drivers cited during aggressive driving crackdown
By Wes Horrocks
BINGHAM COUNTY - If you noticed a lot of Idaho State Police troopers along I-15 in Bingham County Thursday you're not alone.
Eyewitness News reported last week that the officers would be out looking for aggressive drivers around trucks, and they've been handing out several citations. Aggressive driving includes tailgating big trucks, cutting them off, or staying in their blind spots. Paul McDaniel, Truck Driving Training Instructor with SAGE Truck Driving School said, "It's a huge problem for everybody, especially for trucks." To put a stop to it, officers from the Idaho State Police rode in a truck up and down a 28-mile stretch of I-15 watching for problems. SAGE Truck Driving School donated one of the trucks being used, and instructors are hoping the action will remind drivers about the rules of the road. McDaniel said, "For students who've never been behind the wheel of those vehicles, they're just learning how to drive, it can be a little tense. We get into some tense situations sometimes." About a dozen officers from ISP and the Bingham County Sheriff's Office assisted with Thursday's operation. Sgt. Colin Bonner, with the Idaho State Police said, "Ultimately what we want to do is reduce our truck vs. car crash ratio. It was climbing there for a while so we're trying to bring that back down." And while the emphasis is on pulling over passenger cars that are driving aggressively, if officers see trucks that are breaking the law they'll be looking at a citation as well. "Seeing a lot of cars pulled over," said Bonner. And one after another they were cited. Officers are asking that drivers give trucks more room on the road. And to see if the crackdown is making a difference they'll be back in a few weeks to do it all again. "Hopefully it'll cause them to slow down and be a little more considerate of other drivers," said McDaniel. Officers issued about 34 citations, and even caught one driver who was under the influence of drugs. Along with the ticket everyone was also given a handout explaining the aggressive driving crackdown, and why it's important for them to pay more attention while they're driving. |
