POCATELLO - Idaho State University has joined the on-line world of social networking with a facebook page, Twitter account, and YouTube channel.

But it isn't just to keep you updated on what's happening, the new technology could help recruit more students.

It seems social networking is the way of the future, and Idaho State University is jumping on board.

While they've only been on-line for three weeks nearly 1200 people have become fans. Graham Garner, Idaho State University Spokesman said, "We know that it's not just a join and walk away, but they're actually talking to each other, and having discussions about the university and events that are going on."

The technology can also answer the questions of potential students immediately. Scott Turner, University Business Officer with Student Affairs said, "What is the University? What is the student lifestyle? What does housing look like? What do the classes look like?"

And there is almost no cost. Turner said, "We know the response when they log on."

Even current students feel like it's a smart move. Krystal Germer, a Music Senior said, "Students who go to the university might have the page on their facebook page, and it could just show people there is a university."

Bryan Byrd, a Business Freshman added, "With as many people that use it, yeah I believe it would be a good way to get that recruiting information out."

When the pages were created administrators were nervous that it would be tough to attract visitors.

Now they post pictures and videos almost every day just to keep up with demand. Garner said, "It's young people, older people, people who are faculty and staff, students, people who I'm not even sure what their affiliation is with the institution."

And as the following continues to grow the university will work to get more departments and people involved to make sure it remains a valuable tool.

Recruiters will start talking to kids in middle and high school about the new facebook and Twitter pages so that they can check things out for themselves.

They also believe the sites are a good resource for parents to see where their kids will be going to school.
