Flooding causes widespread damage in Bannock County

POCATELLO - Heavy rain Friday afternoon has created some big problems in Bannock County.

County Commissioners have even declared an emergency due to flooding.

But neighbors have actually been the biggest asset in subdivisions like one next to Riverside Golf Course.

As soon as the rains started, and people noticed flooding they were checking on each others houses and bailing water out of window wells. John Whitworth, Volunteer said, "If it goes in there, it goes in the basement. So we're trying to stop that now."

People grabbed buckets and pumps to help, but for a few homes it was too late. Whitworth said, "I had heard that they needed help-there was a lot of flooding. So I came down."

It seemed to come out of no where. Rain and hail quickly filled retention ponds, and covered roads.

The water was moving so fast that even a few animals were swept away from home. Jeff Faust, homeowner of three years said, "I was called home, it was a heavy down pour. It look like the storm stalled over us, and just continued to rain and hail. We really ran into problems when the hail blocked the rain spouts."

Police officers and firefighters are stationed throughout the city to block dangerous roads and to help where they can.

The struggle right now is finding supplies. "Pump here, and we're trying to pump over here. They just took another pump over there. It's a fight right now," said Whitworth.

A fight no one thought they would ever have to face. Faust said, "Well, it's Riverside Greens. It's a river for sure."

Now that it looks like the rains have actually stopped everyones fingers are still crossed that nothing else comes through this evening, or else they could experience even more problems.
