REXBURG - "I think it's a problem sometimes because people are in a rush to get to their classes, so they speed like crazy, and they don't stop at the stop signs," said Kari Paterson, who is renting a house on College Avenue.

The city plans to issue decals similar to a university sticker like this. Residents will be given a free parking pass, and a limited supply will be sold to students freeing up some space. Renters and homeowners alike think it's a great idea.

"This would be a great help to have resident parking here, and it would be safer too," said Bernie Jensen, who has owned a home for 45 years on College Avenue.

Campus is a stone's throw away from college Avenue where on one side of the street, students live, and on the other side, families. Parking has been such a big problem that even the Jensen family has had to call the cops when a car blocks their driveway.

"Most of us have a single lane driveway. When family comes, I had to park way at the other end of the street, and I got a ticket," explained Jensen.

"Really the goal is to have that student park there for the day and then become a pedestrian, and that's the goal of the university as well," said Rexburg Mayor Shawn Larsen.

But that won't work for the Rangitsch family, students who have a baby to haul across campus.

"It makes it difficult if you have a stroller you have to push, and a baby you have to take with you. We can't really walk because we live out of town," explained BYU-I Student (and parent) Joseph Rangitsch.

But even a student renting a home on College Avenue thinks otherwise.

"We pay to live here, so they should pay to park on the street," said Paterson.

And the Jensen family who have lived here for 45 years wish they didn't have to pull out 3 cars just to get out of their garage.

"I think this should have happened a long time ago," said Jensen.

The city hasn't officially voted to go forward with a decal system and is still accepting public input.
