Kids bike for National Bike to Work Day!
By Jennifer McGraw
UCON - Fifth graders got their bikes tuned up and put their helmets on as part of end of the year fitness challenge, and of course for a little fun.
"It will just be a fun experience to get to ride your bikes around and see the places of Idaho," says Shaila McGuire. But don't forget, safety first. Of all bike fatalities, 90 percent of them could be avoided, if you're wearing a helmet. Over sixty kids from Ucon Elementary hit the road on two-wheels this morning ready for a long haul. "We're going to be riding about 12 miles," says Emily Preston. "I've never been on this long of a bike ride," says Elizabeth Preston. But Ucon kids are no stranger to a fitness challenge. "We are Presidential Fitness winners, that's a historical thing, we've done it every year since 1990," says Jill Starnes, principal of Ucon Elementary. Not one they're planning to give up any time soon. "We're starting one more tradition with getting our kids out and being physically fit," says Starnes. Definitely a challenge they're ready to take on. "It's going to be a good ride for exercise," says Nathan Andrews. "I think it's going to be a lot of fun," says Preston. But then again, it's still 12 miles. "I bet when I get home I'm going to be really sore," says Preston. Either way, well worth the trip. |
