IDAHO FALLS - A new study out says Children who watch adult-themed television are more likely to become sexually active as teens.

The study, done by the Children's Hospital Boston, looks at 754 teens, who, when younger, regularly watched adult shows like TV drama's and soap operas.

Researchers followed those same teens 5 years later and found the earlier in life the kids were exposed, the earlier they became sexually active. The parents we talked with today agree with the findings.

"I think the more exposure that little kids have, they're be more curious about things. And they may not go to their parents if they see it on TV," says Tanya Rupple.

"Everything that our children learn, they learn by example," says Jennifer Tucker.

Rick: "Would you say kids should stay away from adult themed TV shows?"
Chris Brayton: "I think so, I think shows like Desperate Housewives and things like that probably are not best for children to see."

Rick: "Do you think that talking to your kids about sex will help change this?"
Tanya: "Definitely, I think, parents, when kids have questions or if kids are watching shows like that, parents need to explain things like that."

"But, if we introduce it too young, they're not emotionally ready to understand that kind of relationship," says Tucker.

Depending on the age of your child, they may be too young to formally process the information. Several behavioral specialists Eyewitness News talked with on the phone say children might attach emotions to physical actions that don't belong together.
