Heritage Park in running for grant
By Steven Pope
SUGAR CITY - The Superbowl was months ago, but the effects of its advertising are still being felt.
A Kellogg's Frosted Flakes commercial is offering make-overs to 30 parks in the nation. Sugar City is getting excited because Heritage Park is one of the top 100 finalists so far. Rich Garner, who nominated the park on a long-shot, talks to Eyewitness News. "Two summers ago my son and I did an eagle project at Heritage Park. They put about 30 hours in and they didn't even make a dent. I saw the Superbowl commercial and thought I hope they are for real about helping out, we nominated Heritage Park just hoping something would turn out, out of the thousands and thousands nominated we're lucky enough to be one of the 100." If Heritage Parks wins, it will get a 15,000 dollar grant to fix-up the baseball diamond and possibly even put in a second one. And although it's now basically a 1 in 3 chance to win, it was a long-shot to get in the top 100. "Sometimes you have to take a chance, nothing will come from it if you don't try," said Garner. Rich Garner is a sixth grade teacher at Kershaw Intermediate School. His class is doing everything they can to help out. I asked his class, "If you want Heritage Park to win, what do you need to do?" In unison (okay they practiced this for TV) they replied, "Go to FrostedFlakes.com and vote." Well you heard it from the kids, you need to go to FrostedFlakes.com and vote. Heritage Park was established by settlers in the early 1900's. No one in Sugar City knew they were in the finals until Tuesday, since then 350 votes have been cast already. But they're still a few hundred behind first place. |
