Computer glitch leaves 50-thousand without welfare money
By Anthony Congi
IDAHO FALLS - Yesterday, Kristen Gazaway, an aide at Emerson High School, went to Walmart to do her regular shopping for groceries.
And when she got to the checkout counter, she used her welfare debit card. "She gives me my total, I swipe my card and it's denied. Swipe it again, it's denied. She hands me a little balance sheet it says I have ten dollars in there," says Gazaway. Every first Sunday of the month at midnight, her $460 of supplemental welfare money is supposed to be deposited into her account. But hers wasn't there. "I really just wanted to crawl into a hole. I really hate having to rely on this to supplement my income. But I have 3 kids, no child support, and so, that's what I have," sasy Gazaway. Even though she was able to buy the groceries using the money she had been saving in her own bank card; she still wanted answers, but was unable to find anyone to talk to her to explain why it happened. So I tried to find some answers for her. Unfortunately, I wasn't having much luck either. "Your call will be answered in approximately 46 minutes. There are now 41 calls waiting ahead of you" So I waited, and waited. Well I'm still waiting. It's been about twenty minutes and I'm still told I have 27 people waiting ahead of me. Obviously a lot of people are looking for some answers also. Finally I reached Health and Welfare's Public Information Officer. Kristen, and more than 50-thousand others who are given supplemental money did not have their funds due to a glitch in the computer system. Apparently the state's computers did not properly connect to the vendor, J.P. Morgan Chase. However, they were able to fix the problem and by now, everyone who was supposed to get their money should have it by now. Walmart will be working with Kristen to try and get her groceries put on her supplemental welfare card and have her money reimbursed to her savings. However, Health and Welfare will not be reimbursing those who were affected by the glitch, since the money is used for supplemental reasons. |
