Teacher recruitment fair

POCATELLO - "There's always a need for teachers especially in certain subject areas, math, science, and special ed," says vice president of recruiting Bonnie Zuckerman.

The need for teachers may actually increase as those working in the field will be heading out and fewer and fewer decide to go in.

"There's a lot of baby boomers retiring especially from education and there aren't as many folks going into education in college anymore, so we need a lot of different routes," says Zuckerman.

One route to take is through the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence.

"It allows you to get your certification through a self paced on-line program without going back to school or taking additional college courses," says Zuckerman.

For most candidates the program is a way to try something new.

"I know I haven't been able to work in my field for a long time but being a teacher would be a good career change," says Myrna Daniels.

And also a way to get it done efficiently.

"To get a teaching certificate without jumping through too many hoops," says Karrie Anderson.

Even with cutbacks in many school districts there is still room for employment.

"I would encourage candidates to talk to specific districts if they have questions about that but there are still openings out there," says Zuckerman.

People already getting their feet wet in education know it's something they will strive for.

"I started substituting school and I liked it, I liked it a lot," says Anderson.

Especially when it comes to juggling a career and home life.

"I have children so it would be nice to have summers off it would be nice to be more involved in their education as well," says Daniels.

Although the program may be a more flexible alternative to teacher certification, it still takes a lot of hard work.

"Most candidates take about eight or nine months to prepare and the exams are very rigorous it's not a short cut. It can be faster for some people but it's not necessary easier than another route," says Zuckerman.

If you're interested, another recruitment fair will take place tomorrow in Idaho Falls at the Red Lion Inn.

Sessions will be held at 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30 pm.
