Hazing incident at Shelley High

SHELLEY - Recently, the Shelley High Russet's wrestling team was having what they call "wrestle-offs" in the school's wrestling room.

Though we weren't told specific details, we are told a few team members were off to the side and doing what the principal called "less than desirable activities."

As soon as a coach became aware of it, he broke it up.

"Even though it was an isolated incident, we had kids that were not treating each other with respect. And whether some of it was simple horseplay, some of it was simple teasing, some of it buddy-buddy, but it carried over pass that to where it really became harassment," says Shelley High Principal, Dale Clark.

When it crossed over that line, the school became involved. After doing a thorough investigation, the school disciplined 6 students and a staff member.

Each wrestler was held out of three matches. The staff member was held out of practices and matches.

Since this incident, the faculty of Shelley High has been made aware of the situation.

At any school, issues with harassment happen not only in athletics, but the hallways and classrooms.

To prevent this from happening again, the school is making kids aware this will not be tolerated.

"The more that people understand that it shouldn't happen, the less likely that it will happen in the future," explains Clark.

The other wrestlers on the team have since welcomed the victim back and have tried to put this all behind them.

"Kids make mistakes, adults make mistakes and they are held accountable for those mistakes and you try to let them move on so that they can become better people," says Clark.

The principal also told me a parent has gone before the school board to make them aware of the incident.

The person was told their rights as to what they could do next if they wanted to.

Right now, the principal doesn't know when or even if they will.

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
