Qwest switches cell phone carriers

Qwest is making a transition from Sprint to Verizon Wireless and during the transition it's customers have the option to either sign on with Verizon or with a new carrier.

Last Friday, I told you one man's frustrations with Qwest and Monday I finally got a hold of Qwest directly to clarify any discrepancies.

"They said I have to make a two year agreement. I said no problem. We pay our bill. I've had the same phone number for three years," said Robert Eickmann on Friday, January 2.

With Qwest transitioning from Sprint to Verizon, Robert Eickmann is upset he can't keep his original agreement.

"I can't call my home for free, or my home can't call my phone for free, which was part of the original plan," he said.

He feels he signed a contract with you (Qwest) he honored his contract and paid his bill then he feels like Qwest should be doing the same.

"Well I guess we're not going to have an answer for that. We made a decision as a company to switch our providers because we think it would be better for our customers," says Bob Gravely, spokesman for Qwest.

Unfortunately the transition hasn't been smooth for Eickmann, but Qwest promises to look into his situation further and assures me most customers are satisfied.

"Since about August we've transitioned tens of thousands of customers over to the Verizon network, and I believe most have been enjoyable experiences and I'm sorry for this experience with Mr. Eickmann that wasn't as enjoyable," says Tammy Beck, Qwest employee.

And this transition they say will provide customers with better cell coverage and ultimately a better plan.

"We want to work with each customer individually on the transition. We think they will be better off once it's made and we hope they stay with us," says Gravely.

To avoid issues during this transition, Qwest stopped offering two year agreements in August of last, year so that wouldn't have to break contracts with customers.

Again Qwest is not dropping all cellular customers. But those customers who do have contracts under Sprint will be void as of Fall 2009. At this point they hope to have every customer transitioned to either Verizon or a new provider.
