New program helping students get male role models
By Wes Horrocks
You've heard of mothers helping out in their children's classroom, but a new program at the American Falls Intermediate School could soon get dads there as well.
The AFIS hopes that their new Dads Of Great Students (Watch D.O.G.S.) program will not only help students succeed, but it can also provide some extra security. Chris Torgesen, Principal said, “By the end of the day they’ll be worn out. They’ll know what a teacher does all day.“ Tuesday night the Watch D.O.G.S. program will kick-off at 6:30 p.m. with a pizza party at the AFIS. So far, about 100 dads have signed up to help out. Torgesen said, “Research shows that if a dad darkens the doors of the school three times a year that makes a huge difference.“ The idea is simple. Dads volunteer to spend one day at the school during the year. They'll spend time in their own child's class, help patrol the halls, play at recess, and anything else that's needed. “Most of the time when I see a dad it’s because there is a problem. We want dads to come to school when there is not a problem, and it’s a positive situation,” said Torgesen. Administrators also feel that getting dads involved with the 210 4th and 5th graders will help them perform better in their classes. Torgesen said, “We want everyone to feel welcome; English speaking, Spanish speaking. And this is a way to tie everyone together, and to make all the dads feel that they’re part of the system. “ Watch D.O.G.S. isn't just for fathers either; it's also open to uncles, grandfathers, and even older siblings who can be positive role models. The program starts on January 5th, and there is no cost for people to participate. “We just think it will be a perfect fit for what we want to do here,” said Torgesen. Besides the kick-off party the school is already planning another Watch D.O.G.S. meeting early next year. If you want get involved you can contact the school at 226-5173, and they can help you schedule a day to volunteer. |
