Economy forcing layoffs at Inkom Plant

INKOM - The economy is the reason one Southeast Idaho company has decided to lay-off about two-thirds of its workforce.

Ash Grove Cement Plant in Inkom has seen a substantial drop in demand for cement due to the housing crisis and lack of construction.

The plant will continue making finished cement, but will shut down their kilns used to make clinker by January. Mike Hrizuk, Western Region Manufacturing Vice-President said, "We don't do it very often, and we take decisions like this very very seriously. And our company being a very closely held company, it's not often that we shut down a facility."

Labor unions are negotiating severance packages for those being layed-off, and career counseling will be made available.

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
