Local medical librarian helps son handle rare type of cancer
By Nate Eaton
REXBURG - A Rexburg woman who spends her days helping doctors, nurses, and patients is also using her skills to help one of the most important people in her life...her son.
Teresa Murdock has been working at Madison Memorial Hospital's medical librarian for the past fifteen years. Just three months ago, Murdock's 19-year-old son Chance was diagnosed with an extremely rare type of terminal cancer. "Medullary thyroid cancer. It's just rarely seen in anyone under 50," says Murdock. What started as a cough ended up with surgery at the Huntsman Cancer institute in Salt Lake City. "They did remove his thyroid and his para-thyroids and they put a permanent tracheotomy in him," says Murdock. While the ordeal was unbelievably hard on the family, one thing that did help is Murdock's 15 year experience as Madison Memorial Hospital's medical librarian. Her job is to research diseases, conditions, and all things medical related that could help patients, nurses and doctors. "They'll see something that they're not real familiar with so they call and request a search," says Murdock. And Murdock does search through thousands of medical journals, publications, and the only website she'll ever recommend to anyone. http://medlineplus.gov. "All the information on this site is peer reviewed, evidenced based, and it is trustworthy," says Murdock. Murdock loves to help the public find answers to their medical questions and never knew how much her job would benefit her family as they went through such a difficult experience. "I was armed with information that I had researched and I was able to ask intelligent questions," says Murdock. Murdock does not give medical advice - she simply helps you find information you need. You can visit her any day with any question and the best part about it is her services are free. As for her son Chase, he will return to the Huntsman Cancer institute on December 2 for radiation treatment. |
