No windmills in Bonneville County
By Jennifer McGraw
IDAHO FALLS - For over six months Bonneville County planning and zoning have been working on a draft for a possible ordinance to build these windmills. Residence are fed up and frustrated that it's taking so long and that no progress is being made.
There's a new way to save money and energy. The revolutionary residential wind turbine is not only environmentally friendly, but it will end up saving you thousands of dollars. The only problem is getting a permit to install one. "But we can't get one because of an administrative tardiness of the people involved," says Anthony Vass. Bingham County, Fremont, Madison, and Jefferson County are all on board with the idea. What's taking Bonneville County so long? "I think they're concerned that they'll have windmills on every corner and are trying to protect people," says Lorin Croft, owner of LC Installations. "What I don't understand is that some cities and some counties can get an ordinance passed in a week and some take six months. That's my frustration," says Steve Painter, owner of West Mountain Wind and Solar. The public is frustrated and wants answers. "I'm retired and living on a fixed income and I'm trying to offset increasing expenses and this is one way I can do that. We want Bonneville county to make those opportunities available to us," says Roger Orme, frustrated resident. The turbines cost 12 to 15 thousand dollars, which seems rather pricey, but in the long run you will see a large payoff in taxes and eventually in your energy bill. "What a beautiful varied county Bonneville County is and what a great resource for wind there is. So let's use it get after it and get it done. We've got winter coming up, higher utility bills, why not use this wind that's going to be coming up then wait till next year and say, well let's think about it some more?" says Croft. Bonneville County planning and zoning met tonight to discuss future plans. The meeting is still going on and no decisions have been made and there are still plenty of people sitting around waiting for a permit. I will stay on top of this story and keep you updated on the progress. |
