REXBURG - A 72-year-old woman is dead after being hit by a car while crossing 2nd West near 3rd South in Rexburg Saturday night. The woman was crossing with a 51-year-old woman who was also hit and is in critical condition at Madison Memorial Hospital.

Around 7:15 p.m., the women were walking east to a concert at the BYU-Idaho Hart Building. Officers believe they pushed a button to turn on flashing yellow lights at the crosswalk before crossing the road.

After they entered the crosswalk, a car traveling north stopped. Police say another vehicle, being driven by a male, failed to stop behind the first vehicle, switched lanes, then slammed into the women.

The 72-year-old woman was killed on impact. Police haven't released the names of the women or the driver of the car.

The accident happened at the same crosswalk where BYU-Idaho student Chera Birch was killed last December. The city installed yellow flashing lights after Birch was killed.

Channel 3 was the only station on the scene of the accident. We will have the latest on the accident on kidk.com as we receive it.
