Taking Action For You: Ririe Man Fed Up About County Roads
By Anthony Congi
RIRIE - You see all of these rocks and it looks like some kind of gravel bar along the river. When actually it's what vehicles drive on everyday.
Jerry Schluter has lived on this road his entire life. He says he doesn't mind having a gravel road or a dust controlled road. But they don't even get that. "We're down to the base gravel which is big cobble rocks, we've got chuck holes we've got washboards. We just don't have a road anymore, it's completely shot," says Schluter. Earlier this summer, the road saw up to 20 trucks going up and down the road 5 times a day working on a development up the road from Jerry. After the road was so beat up, Jerry told me he and his neighbors have called Bonneville County offices several times to get the road worked on, but they haven't seen anyone maintain the road since late April. "The only service we get out of the county, and I'm not afraid to say this is lip service. I've called everybody down there and we can't get a thing out of the county on our road," says Schluter. Jerry says he and his neighbors aren't looking for much, just a grader to smooth out the roads and some water from time to time for dust control. The road is fairly busy with locals, farmers going up and down the road and a school bus that comes up and down the road for kids. And as you can see, when traveling behind a semi, the dust that is turned up is definitely a problem for visibility. I asked him, "People might say, you live out in the outskirts, it just kinda comes with the territory maybe of living that far away, what would you say about that?" "Well we've got 12 homes along here, we pay taxes, we deserve a descent road to drive on instead of an obstacle course," he responded. I talked to Bonneville County Public Works Director Kevin Eckersell this afternoon. He tells me the county watches all their roads carefully and there is a plan to maintain the road, but there are other roads in the county much worse off. And, when the road supervisor feels work is necessary on Birch-Creek, it'll be done. |
