POCATELLO - Suicide is the second leading cause of death among teens in Idaho. In honor of Suicide Prevention Week next week, Pocatello city leaders hope to teach people where they can get help.

Thanks to Idaho State University that help isn't too expensive. The ISU Psychology Clinic is open all year to provide counseling and help,
and its not just to help students. Tony Cellucci, Director of the ISU Psychology Clinic said, "Most of our patients are community folks who may not have a lot of other resources."

The clinic sees about 150 patients a year. Most of the services are provided by graduate students supervised by licensed psychologists.

The supervisors may even watch sessions from behind one-way mirrors to ensure things are going well. Cellucci said, "We emphasize evidence based treatemnets. So we're looking for brief treatments that are effective for a particular problem."

The clinic provides help with everything from anxiety, and depresssion, to family therapy and child behavior problems.

The therapist's goal is to help patients feel better when they leave. "Our clinic can help that individual find motivation, and a route to developing life-skills and a life worth living," said Cellucci.

There are some stigmas about people who seek professional counseling. Tonight city leaders hope to change that by issuing proclamations aimed at reminding people that issues like suicide and substance abuse impact us all. Pocatello Mayor Roger Chase said, "Its trying to be proactive to let people know that all of us have to deal with those issues, and we've got people out there who will help you."

And those at the clinic hope people in the community know they are there to listen. Cellucci said, "To confront (mental health issues) head on and say, 'I'm getting anxious in this situation,' is a sign of strength and resilience."

The initial consultation at the clinic is free, and later session range from $10 to $40 depending on each person's situation.
