POCATELLO - If you are going to be one of those travellers this weekend you'll want to watch out for all the extra police officers.

In the past the Idaho State Police have seen a lot of accidents during the Labor Day weekend, and by adding this year's extra patrols they hope to keep drivers safe and traffic moving. Sgt. Mike Winans, a trooper with ISP said, "We hope to have enough officers out there so that people will definitley see a police presence."

The Idaho State Police hope that extra presence will remind people to drive safely.

On many holiday weekends troopers see drivers speeding up because they're late, or are frustrated with increased traffic. To keep that from happening this weekend they'll try to have a trooper along I-15 every ten miles from Brigham City in Northern Utah to Idaho Falls. "We're teaming up with Utah Highway Patrol, also ISP Region 6 in Idaho Falls. So we're trying to put as many troopers on the road as we can," said Winans.

And with all of those extra trooopers on the road this holiday weekend they're going to be makiing sure drivers are keeping all of the traffic rules. Winans said, "[We'll watch for] tailgating, speeding, unsafe lane changes, all the things that can cause a crash is what we're trying to avoid."

In order to reach their goal, every trooper with the Idaho State Police will be out patrolling this weekend. For some that means putting in several hours of overtime, but they will be happy if they can keep drivers from being hurt this weekend. "I know when I personally pass a police officer I tend to look at my speed, make sure I'm obeying all traffic laws, and that's what we're hoping to accomplish. We want the motoring public to arrive at their destination safely," said Winans.

The extra troopers will be on the road starting tomorrow until Monday..

Even though the focus of the patrols will be on I-15, troopers will still be keeping an eye on Highway 30, and I-86.

This week Gov. Otter signed a bill requiring Idaho to sue the federal government if Congress passes health care reform. What's your response to this?

  • It's great to see Idaho taking the lead on this. Someone has to stand up to what's happening in Washington.
  • We can't afford to pay for education in Idaho, but we're going to spend tax dollars to sue the feds? Ridiculous.
  • Not sure.
