Auto Warranty Rip-Off
By Rick Montanez
IDAHO FALLS - Consumer beware: We're looking at another scam coming your way. This time the schemers are calling you and sending letters in the mail trying to force you to buy an extended warranty for your car, no matter how old or new it is.
This time, I made calls to the Idaho Transportation department, which oversees the DMV, I wanted to know if they release your registration information. "We do release some information to specific groups that are allowed by law to have access to personal information," says Mel Coulter from the Idaho Transportation Department. Those groups include Manufacturers for recall information, insurance information, parking facilities that try to track down people for tickets, and agencies that collect marketing information for car makers and dealers. But I'm told those groups aren't the ones giving you information out. Aaron Carter, a local finance operator at Teton Toyota tells me most of these warranty offers are bogus. "If you buy one of these aftermarket ones, that they mail you. And that company goes belly up, you're not entitled to anything, you don't have a warranty," says Aaron Carter from Teton Toyota. "Rick: As a dealership then, do you guys send out these mailers or call people about the warranties at all? Aaron: We don't, we offer 'em at the time of purchase as an optional feature." After all the calls I made today, nearly everyone I talked with have received these calls or letters, including Mel Coulter at the DMV. "Yep, there are people wanting to sell me extended warranty coverage on my vehicle," says Coulter. The BBB in Boise is getting complaints about these auto warranty brokers, but the office here Idaho Falls hasn't seen very many yet. According to the DMV, the Attorney Generals Office and my own digging, its still a mystery as to how yours and my information is getting out there, if you've fallen for this scam, please let us know about it. We want to tell your story or try to help you out. Just send us an email with your story and contact information to yourturn@kidk.com. |
