Camp Diversity
By Hasti Taghi
As kids enjoy the lazy days of summer some parents are opting to enroll their children in camps to occupy their extra time.
One camp in Pocatello is teaching kids more than just fun activities to do during hot summer days. The cooperative wilderness handicapped outdoor group is holding a camp to help kids not only enjoy their time off from school but teach them a valuable lesson in friendship. "I've been wanting to make friends." -Tarren Gettman, 1st time camper friendships that go beyond camp grounds. The CW Hog kids camp integrates kids with disabilities and kids without them in a setting that teaches each the ability to deal with the other. "they get to learn that everybody is just human, We're all different. Some of us are tall, some of us are short and some are in wheelchairs." Bob Ellis, Outdoor Recreation Coordinator the 6 day-long camp includes basic camp activities like games and outdoor fun. Kids who have participated in the camp before say they have made unforgettable memories. "they're just like normal kids. They act the same, they want the same things and this camp lets them do the same things." Robert Balfour, 3rd year camper The friendships that are built not only teach kids about diversity but give them a priceless lesson in dealing with hardships. "I've learned to keep a positive outlook." Balfour "they take a look around and stop and join their life. Too many kids miss their lives because of tunnel vision." Ellis If you would like to enroll your children in the camp...it's not too late. A 2nd session will begin 2 weeks from today and will run from the 21st to the 26th.
