Rexburg Man Walks to Work Every Day for Over 20 Years
By Nate Eaton
Come rain, sleet, hail or snow...a Rexburg man is taking a page from the postman. Nothing can keep him from *walking* to work.
Joseph West says he's probably saved almost 30 thousand dollars over the years as he's walked to work. It takes him 30 minutes each way and he says it's the best part of his day. It all started when, as a young married couple, he and his wife only had one car. Joseph West, Loves to Walk: "My wife felt like she ought to have the car." Joseph didn't mind. In fact, he quickly fell in love with walking. West: "It was very helpful. If I'd had a stressful day, my problems would seem to go away by the time I got home. I was calm and collected." You might think it's easy to walk to work in the summer time when it's light in the morning and light in the evening. The weather is pretty nice and temperatures feel good but what about in the winter when it's dark, freezing cold, and snowing like crazy?" West: "It almost becomes a challenge. If there's a really bad storm and everybody says, 'Oh I can't get my car started' and things like that and then I make it in." West has never missed a day...partly because of $500 worth of winter clothing, boots, and even walking poles. It's a healthy tradition that Joseph says will continue for a long time. West: "I don't plan on stopping and when I retire I gotta find another reason to do it." In addition to saving money on gas, West saves money by not having to join a gym. He says the hour walk every day has kept him pretty healthy. |
