Saving On MPG
By Jennifer McGraw
Imagine getting 45 miles to the gallon by just reducing your speed.
Blake Grover of Sugar City is doing just that. Blake Grover: "I've been watching in my car the miles that I get." Blake installed a sensor display in his Grand Prix to monitor how much gas he is using. After running several tests, he found driving 60miles per hour on the highway and 30 miles per hour on surface streets dramatically increased his miles per gallon. Blake Grover: "If they just drive a little slower and they don't start up as fast and maybe coast a little bit, that will help." The average American logs 15,000 miles per year. If you're getting at least 25 miles per gallon, at four dollars a gallon, you're spending around $24 hundred dollars annually. Blake is spending half. There are other ways you can save. Reduce Idle time by turning off your car and if you can, coast to and from stop lights. If you have a roof rack take it off. You can save the equivalent of two full takes a year. Check your tires. Properly inflated tires boost gas mileage by three percent. And finally if you have time, log onto gasbuddy.com and it will route you to the cheapest pumps. |
