Annual Port-Neuf Rendezvous
By Wes Horrocks
Nearly 100 residents and visitors had the chance to step back in time at the annual Port-Neuf Muzzleloader Rendezvous this weekend. Many even walked away with a few prizes. The rendezvous is not only an opportunity for friends and families to spend time together, though, it's also a time to explore the past.
The sound of black-powder rifles and shotguns filled the air near McCammon this weekend for the event. This year's activities attracted visitors from Utah, Wyoming, Oregon, and across Idaho. For many the love of camping and desire to reenact the 1840's is natural. Tom Hamilton, from Fort Hall said, "I've been camping since before I was born, right there. Worked in the Boy Scouts, right there, and started doing indian crafts there and it just evolved into this." Many people at the rendezvous say they love spending time with old friends. Others came to see all the clothing and crafts made by many of these mountain men and women. Powder Trickler, a Heyburn resident said, "We make most of our clothes. It's just a good hobby in the winter-time." Hamilton added, "The pants I made. The shirt, right there, the pattern came out of a book I have, 'Homemade.' The hat, right there, I ordered from back east, right there, a mountain man hat. I added the beadwork to it." The rendezvous isn't just for adults, though, young teenagers had a chance to compete in tomahawk throwing contests and other games. Plus each of the kids attending for the first time got a stuffed animal. All of the participants say they hope to see the annual event continue to grow. "Since '92 I've been in this and I found one person I didn't care for. So you know a pretty good bunch of people I would say," said Trickler. If you didn't have a chance to make it to this year's rendezvous there are others scheduled this summer across the area. The next one scheduled is June 8th-11th in Cascade, ID. |
