Unhealthy Health Foods
By Anthony Congi
It's kind of hard to imagine that there are unhealthy health foods. But just in time to get you ready to put on that swimsuit this summer, I have the "health" foods that you should avoid.
We all know that we should avoid these things, and eat more of these..but even some of the foods that you might consider healthy, might not be as good for us as we think. Veeta Sohal, Public Health Dietitian: "Some of the foods have extra sauces, or extra fat or extra sugar added to it, just to make it taste better. When they do that, they also add extra calories." For example, caesar salad with the dressing, loads up the calorie counter. Granted, it's all about size of the meals and how much you eat, but there are alternatives that still taste great. Instead of the caesar, eat a mixed green salad with a light vinaigrette. Or instead of a "healthy" turkey burger, eat a 7 ounce sirloin steak which has 500 less calories and 30 less grams of fat. And instead of margarine, eat good ol' butter which has half the calories and fat, and, no saturated fats. Eat regular granola rather than the bars, which aren't that healthy because they add tons of sugar. After all, what do you think keeps those bars together? Corn syrup of course. Here's another quick cutter, fruit on the bottom yogurt..250 calories. Not too bad. But, if you use plain yogurt, add your own fruit, only a hundred calories. Fruit smoothies are a favorite, but at over 400 calories for 14 ounces, you may want to think again. Sohal: "And just to put things in perspective, to burn 400 calories, you need to walk two hours." Instead, use that blender of yours and make your own 100 percent fruit smoothie with nothing added. Another way to make sure your foods are in fact healthy, read those labels which tell you calories, fat and much more. Sohal: "The labels will tell you the portion sizes also. to eat healthy, always keep in mind portion sizes." Kind of eye opening isn't it? The dietitian I spoke with says that portion control is the most important part of a diet. And always keep in mind that the dressings and sauces for foods are never usually added to serving guides. |
