The mayor of Menan is resigning effective immediately. Mayor Rand Watson emailed us this afternoon along with the entire Menan city council detailing his reasons for quitting.

In the email, Watson says, "I do not wish to be part of a city government that goes against their oath of office by not abiding the laws and ordinances of the city. I feel my time has been wasted and my pleading to follow the ordinances and keep the interests of the Menan citizens in mind has fallen on deaf ears."

Watson's decision comes just days after he walked out of last week's city council meeting.

We talked to one of the Menan city council members just before the show as well.

Gary Maples says, "I thought he was doing a good job, and I just don't know what happened. I'm just really disappointed it has happened this way."

Maples tells us the President of the Council, Brady White, is acting as interim mayor and will likely nominate someone to fill his spot on the council.

Maples says a city wide vote likely won't take place until December 2009, when Watson's term would have ended.
