Debate Over Daycare Ordinance

Debate Over Daycare Ordinance

By Danielle Leigh

The city of Idaho Falls is fighting parents and day cares on a law that already exists and they have no control over.

The city council held a meeting tonight regarding their latest draft of the city's proposed daycare ordinance.

Most of the parents who came, were concerned about the five child limit on family day cares.

"It feels like you guys are trying to push us into taking our son from this home environment to a place where we count how many square feet are in the backyard," says one concerned parent.

That number was not chosen by the city, but set based on national and international zoning laws already in effect.

Here is a list of the new restrictions home daycare providers would see under the proposed ordinance.

Providers would need to get background checks, licenses, and liability insurance; and also pass a health and fire inspection.

The city did approve certain changes to the wording of the current draft, to clarify rules on outside play space, and that means its back to the drawing board on this nearly year-long project.

On a side note, the city council says it has no intention of going door to door making sure all home day cares are in compliance.
