Unsafe Crossing Near School

By Danielle Leigh

A Falls Valley Elementary student is almost hit trying to cross the street on his way to school.

Parents say similar close calls happen almost every day, and now they want a school crossing on Hitt road.

"He was standing on the corner of Hitt and East View, and there was a lady coming on Hitt, and this car that was behind her was going really fast like 40-50 mph, and came into the borrow put on the gravel, and almost hit my little boy," says Kecia Morgan.

This intersection is the culprit. Kids living in the Woodbridge subdivision can look across the street and see their school, but because there's no crosswalks on Hitt road, they can't safely walk to it.

That's why the Bonneville Joint School District has been "Safety Busing" the 57 kids living here.

"There's lots of traffic through this one," says Health and Safety Coordinator Guy Bliesner. "It's just inherently safer."

When he has to catch the bus he has to leave here at eight in the morning and school doesn't start until 8:40. He has to walk clear down to the bus stop which is pretty far away so he thinks it's just faster to cross Hitt Road," says Morgan.

Convenience isn't the only reason parents in Woodbridge are hesitant to put their kids on the bus.

Kecia Morgan, who's son was almost hit, drove me through the neighborhood and showed me why.

Just to get to the bus stop, her son has to cross several streets with no signage or crosswalks.

"It's just not safe for kids to be out here," says Morgan. "I would like to see a school zone, a crossing guard, or a 20 mph zone during school."

The decision to add a cross walk or more signage to that neighborhood is up to the city of Idaho Falls.

I've left several messages for the city engineer and he hasn't returned my calls, but I will continue to look into the issue.

I'm told the reason Hitt doesn't have a crosswalk is because the city doesn't want to slow the flow of traffic.

However, the district says that if a crosswalk is installed busing will no longer be an option for Woodbridge. Kids will have to walk.
