Local Bone Marrow Drive Coming to an EndBy Wes Horrocks
This could be the last year for the annual bone marrow drive "Angels for Alec," all because money to find potential donors will now be going to larger areas. The drive is now in its 8th year, but organizers say they may not have testing kits in the future.
"Angels for Alec" was created in honor of 6-year old Alec Cano, an active, energetic boy who died of leukemia in 2000. His mom Diane Cano said, "He just was a joy to be around. He was tough. I remember the last thing he said to me was I'm still fighting." Since it's creation the drive has gotten thousands of people signed up for the bone marrow registry, and all it takes is a simple cotton swab. Mark Allen, donor coordinator from St. Luke's Hospital said, "To get on it's very simple. There's a consent form to fill out, and we have people swab the inside cheek of their mouth to get the cells we need for testing." Once you're on the registry your cells are tested to find out if they match anyone who needs a bone marrow transplant. Only 30% of those who need a transplant can get it from a family member, so organizers want to see as many people on the registry as possible. "You can't help anyone unless you're on the registry. So if you get on you may never be called, but you also could help someone if you're a good match for someone in need," said Allen. Testing kits each cost $52 and are normally donated by St. Luke's in Boise, but the hospital has been deemed to small to be a testing center and can no longer make the donation. But if this is their last year, Alec's parents want people to know there are still ways to help. Diane said, "If you're ever interested in getting on a registry you can go onto the computer. There's a website through the national registry. So even though this might be our last one, you can still get on the registry." If you didn't have a chance to make it to the bone marrow drive today, "Angels for Alec will be at the ISU pond student union tomorrow from 9 AM to 1PM. |
