"Secret Shopper" Scam
By Araksya Karapetyan
And the latest scam you need to watch out for what may already be in your mailbox.
If you get a white envelope with no return address and a bright yellow stamp, all the way from Canada, throw it out. The Better Business Bureau says this scam has been going around for at least three weeks. How would you like to make some extra cash? Donna Oe, BBB President: "Wow, this is a lot of money." All you have to do is be a "secret" shopper. Sounds exciting right? And while you shop you get to grade the customer service of some big names. Oe: "Do a survey to check out local businesses and look they're real businesses, we're talking McDonalds, Wal-Mart, names you know." It sure looks like an official check. But before you take this four thousand dollar plus check to the bank, read between the lines. Oe: "You're asked to send the greater portion of the funds back to this company and retain approximately four hundred of that amount for your work first earnings." Bottom line your out forty-three hundred dollars. Oe: "These purchases are coming out of your own funds." Now if you have received one of these, and have already made the deposit, worst case scenario you'll be charged by the bank for insufficient funds. That is as long as you haven't spent any of that money. And if you've been lucky so far and haven't gotten one of these, as soon as you do, either toss it out or you can stop by the BBB and drop it off. They have a big folder, for these, that's filling up fast. |
