Steve Gerhardt Hembreiker Named as Deceased Suspect in Shooting

By Hasti Taghi

Steve Gerhardt Hembreiker was not an unknown name to law enforcement. In fact he had a long criminal history including some time spent in prison.
So when his father heard news of a shooting in the neighborhood...he immediately felt uneasy.

"I knew it was him"

At around 12:30 Monday afternoon...Hembreiker was driving this red pickup truck when officers spotted him. He was driving without a license and officers had information that he may be armed. Before making a traffic stop...Hembreiker jumped out of his still-moving vehicle and ran on foot.
At this point he was involved in a struggle with a policeman over a gun he was carrying... The officer felt the need to draw his gun and shoot.

"every situation is different but this officer felt he needed to use his gun to protect himself."

Hembreiker was taken to Bingham Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead a short while later. News no parents want to hear..

"I was really hoping he wasn't dead but my gut told me different."

4 officers involved in the incident are on administrative leave and the Blackfoot police department is investigating the use of force.
