Controlling Idaho's Wolf Population

Controlling Idaho's Wolf Population

By Wes Horrocks

Here is a question for you-What should be done with the state's wolf population? It's an issue that has been a controversy for the last 13 years.

Well tonight the Department of Fish and Game discussed the creation of a wolf hunting season this fall. Officials want to maintain a wolf population of about 500 to 700 animals. And to do that they'll allow hunters to kill more than 300 this fall.

They say the state's wolf population has been growing about 20% every year since 1995, and now that they're no longer on the endagered species list the population needs to be controlled.

But concerns were expressed at tonight's meeting about wolves being killed illegally, and the impact of wolves on the state's elk population.

Officials say they'll take all the concerns into consideration before making a decision about the wolf hunting season on May 16th. Martha Wackenhut, a biologist with Fish and Game said, "What we want to get is just an idea of what the public wants, and what the public is thinking in terms of wolf seasons for the fall."

Other public meetings will be held over the next few weeks throughout the rest of the state. And you can also submit your ideas and concerns to the Dept. of Fish and Game through their website at www.fishandgameidaho.gov.
