Fixing Fractures
By Kris Keach
At Bingham Memorial Hospital they now can fix compression fractures .
The procedure takes only hours and patients can return to normal activities within a day. For patients like Olive Smith getting around before her surgery was painful. But then she had her spinal compression fracture fixed using Balloon Kyphoplasty. Olive Smith: "Now I can get around real good and go to bed and sleep and rest, get rested. I couldn't get any rest before." This surgery is nothing new it's been around since 1998. However, the treatment has only been available at Bingham Memorial since January of this year. Dr. Shelley: "What this does, it uses this high-end cement called polymethacrylate that basically cures or heals the fracture almost immediately and gets rid of the pain. It takes about three hours and the patient goes home." People that have fallen, have osteoporosis or compression fractures can look into this surgery. Dr. Shelley: "Now in the past most, many patients have just suffered through the pain of allowing it to heal on it's own. By giving bed rest orders and narcotics. But with a success rate of 85 to 90 percent patients don't have to live with the pain anymore. Dr. Shelley: "There are not many procedures in medicine where you get instant gratification...instant results." Now most insurance companies and Medi-Care cover this surgery.
