Lip Gloss Dangers

Believe it or not, its springtime and summer is right around the corner, which means its time to get ready for sun exposure.

Now some dermatologists are saying you need to protect your lips, because some of us women are more at risk for skin damage and even cancer, depending on the kind of lip gloss you use.

Don't worry ladies, lip gloss is safe, you just want to make sure it has something in it to protect you from the sun.

Ladies use it everyday, lip gloss, its a nice way to add some shine, but that shine attracts more sun.

"If they're really a moisturizing with out a protection its like a magnifying glass to the lips, so you end up getting extra burned," says Dr. Daniel Rick from the Physician Skin Care Office in Idaho Falls.

And that burn can later lead to sun damage or even skin cancer. That's because the lips are easily susceptible to sun burns.

"The lips, they get a lot more moisture cause you're drinking, you're sweating," says Dr. Rick.

Doctors report lip cancer as one of the most aggressive and most common forms of skin cancer. Some signs to watch out for, abnormal white and orange spots, sores that last for more than 2 weeks, and peeling flaking and chapping.

The good news, Dr. Rick and his office will be doing free skin exams all next week, as next week is Melanoma Monday.

"It its something that has been bothering you, its been growing, or you're just worried about it, pop in just so we can take a look at it," says Dr. Rick.

With this information in mind, I asked a few young ladies today about their lip gloss.

"Rick: Do you know if your lip glosses have SPF in them?
Girls: I don't think mine does...Mine does."

"Sometimes I look, if I don't buy chap stick I look to make sure I'll get lip gloss that has protective SPF," says Kimberly Roberts.

"I like to put chap stick on my lips first and then I like to coat it a lot, cause it helps so I don't just wear the lip gloss that way I don't get chapped," says Cassandra Gruhlke.

That last girl had it right on, if you're gloss doesn't have SPF, you can use a chap stick with SPF as a base. And the free skin exams are at the Skin Care office in Idaho Falls.

For information you can call the office at (208) 557-0200. Or stop by next week...730 S Woodruff Ave Idaho Falls.
